When posting images online, adding alt text, or alternative text, helps people who rely on it because for whatever reason they can’t view images. For example, it’s helpful for blind and visually impaired people who rely on screen readers. It also shows up in place of any images that fail to load for whatever reason.
Creating high-quality alt text can be a chore. I created a GPT that writes alt text for you. It follows the recommendations of the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative.
You can use it here: ChatGPT – Alt Text Writer.
I created it because I was looking for an AI alt text writer where I could simply upload an image with no other prompting and get good alt text generated, and I couldn’t find one. I’ve been using it for a few months and it’s been working very well for me.
For example, I used it to creat the alt text for the featured image for this post, the icon for the GPT. I just uploaded the image of the icon and pressed “send,” and I got the following output:
Icon of a speech bubble containing an image placeholder with mountains and a sun above two horizontal lines, representing text. The design is in white on a black background.

Feel free to comment below or reach out if you have any feedback. I’d also appreciate it if you leave a review. When you follow the link to the GPT, you can access the reviews by using the dropdown menu at the top left of the screen.
